The Mendenhall Glacier

Yesterday we went by helicopter from Juneau to go Dog Sledding on the Mendenhall Glacier – 3,500 ft above sea level, and 100 foot of snow sitting on 1,000 fleet of glacial ice.

The dots on the left are the camp where the dogs and their ‘mushers’ live for the season. In September every trace of the camp is removed from the glacier ( including all of the collected dog poo! ) and the following May the camp is flown in by helicopter – with all of the dogs – and rebuilt from scratch.
